Mechanical engineering focuses on the design and production of energy-producing systems and on mechanical devices or mechanisms. These systems and mechanisms are applied to fields ranging from biology, such as artificial hearts, to transport systems, such as cars and airplanes, and in manufacturing tools and plants. The mechanical engineering curriculum at UMBC, accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, provides students thorough training in mathematics, physical sciences, engineering sciences and engineering design.

Admission to the Program
First-year students who declare an interest in Mechanical Engineering at the time of the application are admitted to the university as Pre-Mechanical Engineering students. Full admission to the Mechanical Engineering, B.S. is granted upon completion of the gateway courses and upon previous transcript review (if applicable). Transfer students are reviewed for eligibility at the point of application. Those eligible are admitted to the major upon completion of Gateway courses and one semester at UMBC. - Students complete the Mechanical Engineering, B.S. by fulfilling all major course requirements and all General Education and university requirements.
- Minimum grade of ‘C’ in courses applied to the major except where otherwise indicated.
- Mechanical Engineering students must complete a minimum of 24 credits of ENME courses with a grade of ‘C’ or better at UMBC
- Mechanical Engineering does not support petitions to repeat required lower-level (100- and 200-level) courses for the purpose of continuing in the major. More information about the repeat policy is available on the Academic Policies page.
Mechanical Engineering Gateway (10 credits)
Complete the following courses with a grade of ‘B’ or better: Chemistry (10 credits)
Complete the following: Mathematics and Physics Courses (23 credits)
Complete the following: Engineering Courses (47 credits)
Complete the following: Mechanical Engineering 400-Level Design Elective (3 credits)
Complete 3 credits from the following: Mechanical Engineering 400-Level Technical Elective (3 credits)
Complete 3 credits from the following. An additional course from the design electives may also be used to fulfill this requirement. Science/Technical Elective (3-4 credits)
Complete one course from the following. An additional course from the design or technical electives may also be used to fulfill this requirement. Accelerated Bachelor’s/Master’s Programs
Qualified students may apply to an accelerated program, which allows them to share courses between a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree. Students take graduate courses as undergraduate students and later apply those courses to master’s degrees. An undergraduate may apply to participate in an accelerated program even if the desired graduate program is in a department other than the one in which the student is majoring.
